Comparison and the expression of degree in Mbyá Guaraní

Abstract: This paper describes comparative constructions and related constructions in Mbyá, paying attention both to their morphosyntactic properties and to their interpretation. Although there is a rich tradition of studies of comparative constructions in formal syntax and semantics and in typology, these constructions have not been studied in detail in Guaraní languages. This paper begins to fill this gap, focusing on aspects of comparative constructions that are relevant to current theoretical debates on comparison.
